Treatment

brief

For this project we have been tasked with creating a short film of professional quality. The film could be of any genre other than Comedy or horror.
As well as creating the film we must also organise every step of pre Production, Production and post production. We also must show why we have included the elements and production techniques we have chosen to include.
Our film will be titled "The White Room" and will revolve around the story of a student who is kidnapped after meeting with a friend. As well as this it will show the events leading up to the kidnapping from the point of view of the criminal who lives with his stuttering, PTSD ridden partner.

target audience:

Our target audience is ABC1 17-25 people of all genders. This is because we feel like this group of people will have the income as well aw the disposable income in order to consume a media product of this nature. As well as this this group of people would be the most likely to use YouTube which will be the primary distribution of the film.

segment synopsis and how it relates to the brief Key milestones

The film we will create will show the stories of a kidnapper and his victim and how their paths cross. The idea of this is to create as dark sense of foreboding and a tense tone and plot. The opening will be a crosscutting sequence which will show them both getting ready which will then lead onto two separate dialogue scenes one with Christopher Baits (the victim and main protagonist) speaking to his friend Andrew about how his life is going poorly as that he has recently broken up with huis girlfriend and his degree isn't turning out the way he wanted it too.

Aaron will be presented as a younger man than Chris with a more clearly strict upbringing from his carer Wayne who is a veteran who left the army with PTSD causing him to stutter.
This scene will be followed up with a conversation between Aaron (the kidnapper and main antagonist) and his partner Wayne who struggles to speak coherently but tells him that he will secure a location and that he is being trusted to conduct the hit as that the "Boss" wants him to prove himself.
Following this we see Christopher leave the café which he spoke to Andrew in and walks down the street only to be captured by Aaron. this closes the film.
We decided on a basic plotline as that it would be reasonably easy to edit together as well a to film meaning that we could apply some interesting visuals. As well as this I feel that the cryptic plotline would make for an ominous tone which would fit the conventions of a standard thriller film which is what we are trying to create.

This moodpboard represents the intended tone I want to create with this film. It includes similar film as well as images which convey the dark, tense themes that I wish to convey

Equipment:

To film this production we will need a DSLR camera, Microphone, tripod and slider. We will also need SD cards to store the footage we recorded

As well as this we will need computers to edit the final product together. On these computers we will require the adobe creative suite as well as Microsoft office so that we can create professional documents such as release and connect forms, Recces sheets. We will also need the internet so that we can store our drafts online as well as  create methods of feedback such as on "Surveymonkey" so that we know what to change to improve the overall quality of our product

Props and models:

Our production will require a few props however not as many as other films. below I have included a list of the props that we will need as well as the reason why.

Large Knife: A knife will be needed in our production as that it will be used in the crosscutting sequence as to show the contrasts between a normal person (Christopher and a kidnapper) such as Aaron

Balaclava: This is to be used in the final scene when the kidnapping takes place as to add legitimacy to the character of Aaron as that in real life someone committing this crime would want anonymity.
Coffee cups: these items will add verisimilitude to the scene in the café making the audience believe in the authenticity of the events more.
In terms  of actors we will need four for speaking roles (Aaron, Chris, Wayne and Andrew) as well as a few extras (people for within the café.) We will likely get actors by placing an ad on a website called "Star now" which allows people to source work in their local area.

Health and safety considerations:

When filming the white room we will ensure that our locations will be scouted beforehand and will have detailed risk assessments written about them this should ensure the health and safety of all of actors as well as shooting crew.
The risk assessments will need to be detailed and all encompassing accounting for any and all possible safety dangers as that we need to ensure that we are not putting anyone in danger as that while on the set anyone working with us is trusting us to make sure that they are safe. There will be a complete risk assessment for each area we film in.
As well as this while working on the set I will make sure that safe working practices are followed. These will just be precautions that are small but important for example when we are outside as we will be for filming several parts of the film we will ensure that all of the equipment Is packed up in bags designed to carry them. This will reduce the chances of someone attempting to take our equipment or us breaking it. As well as this other precautions will include taping down wires and making sure that theres nothing sharp on any of the sets which could pose a threat.

Legal and ethical considerations:

there are several legal issues that we will need to abide by when creating this product. Firstly is that we do not break the law set out in copyright law with our use of music in post production as that doing so cold mean that we have to pay a fine. In order to avoid this we will attempt to contact the owners of the music which we use. As well as this we will check the policies that the songs have on the YouTube creator studio programme as that that can give an impression of whether of a company will take action against the use of a piece of music. In addition to this we will attempt to use royalty free music where possible.

Another large legal issue is the process of gaining the permissions of all people involved in the shooting process to appear in the film as that if it is found there was no mutual understanding between the two parties then it could lead to us being sued. To avoid this all of actors will give permission to be in the film weather in the form of a standard release and consent form or some kind of digital communication.

In terms of ethical issues we must ensure that our film is not discriminatory towards any group of people or in any way offensive (not containing any subject matter or humour that could be considered Racist, Sexist, Homophobic, Transphobic etc.)
